Our symbol for this month is gesture of power.

Gesture is an overlooked physical language in an era defined by words. Where the project of written language has become much more about accessibility, gesture speaks to a time where the written word was an elite privilege and subtleties of language were mostly played out orally and visually. Even now, when language fails us we turn to gesture to communicate. In cultures where many languages overlap and differ, you find significantly more use of gesture to smooth out the various differences in tongue. Gesture still plays a tremendous role in the projection of power both religious and political, think of the 1968 Olympics Black Power salute, Mussolini's fist, the papal benediction gesture. These gesture's translate verbal expression into a visual language that is burned into one's brain.

Think about gesture in your own life. How you physically communicate? What gestures of power do you see in the contemporary world or in history? What gestures of power do you use or have used in the past? Does this language change based on who you use it with?

Happy Writing!
