The Circle and the Wheel and the Sundoor

A Greek vase painting, pictures Helios driving the sun chariot through the sky and the stars appear as floating, diving figures through the blue. The chariot itself in it diurnal movement moves in an arc through the daylight sky and by extrapolation through the world of night below the surface of the earth, thus forming a circle in its daily journey. Imagery of birth, death and rebirth may arise from the timeless past when men saw the sun die each evening to be reborn again each morning. The circle of days extends into the years as the rotation of time.
