From ancient Egypt to Indigenous America to the 20th Century we are taught about the symbolic life through the art of every culture. Each of these images intimates an opening. The door, the clam shell, the containment of the opposites in the sand, all point towards an opening into something new. When we are touched or moved by a symbol we have walked through an opening – something is new, we have changed if ever so slightly. ARAS is that unique place where, through research and proximity, we begin to understand what the symbol is opening us into.
We thank all of you who make our work possible through your contributions. For those of you who are new to ARAS, we hope you will join our family of friends.
