motif of embracing and entwining

Osiris comes to rest in the branches of a tree, which grow up round him. The motif of embracing and entwining is often found in the sun myths and rebirth myths, as in the story of Sleeping Beauty, or the legend of the girl who was imprisoned between the bark and the wood of a tree:

The fig-tree is phallic. It is worth noting at Dionysus planted a fig-tree at the entrance to Hades, in the same way that phalloi were placed on graves. The cypress, sacred to Aphrodite, the Cyprian, became an emblem of death, and used to be placed at the door of houses where people were dying

Jung makes a revolutionary statement which amounts to the announcement of a whole new world view. The statement is that Christ exemplifies the archetype of the Self ( CW9.2: par. 70 ):
